Hazardous Waste Management - Before and After

Below, I have prepared a chart that covers several common hazardous waste areas of concern. Becoming educated about hazardous waste can not only save you money but will help save the environment, too.

WASTE MANAGEMENT BEFORE AND AFTER
BEFORE ACTION AFTER BENEFIT
Paint Waste :
Stored in hazardous containers onsite. Commercial recycler removes them by pre-determined schedule.
Acquire solvent recovery system, based on shop volume. Conduct TCLP testing to determine metals levels in still bottoms Reclassify waste products as "special" or "on-hazardous" waste, disposal negotiated with local landfill authorities Reduce waste removal costs and hazardous reporting responsibility, recover up to 90% of solvent costs Average equipment payback: 6-12 months
Spray Booth/Prep Deck Filters:
Filters stored in hazardous containers onsite. Commercial recycler removes them by pre-determined schedule
Conduct TCLP metals analysis to prove waste products non-hazardous. Reclassify waste products as "special" or "non-hazardous" waste. Negotiate disposal with local landfill authorities Reduce waste removal costs and hazardous reporting responsibility. Average savings: 40% per annum
Parts Washers:
Waste water released into local sewer system or shop sewage via drain field (grease/oil separator) OR hauled away as liquid waste
Conduct TCLP testing on waste water sample to detect lead, chromium, etc. Based on TCLP test results, revise wastewater permit accordingly, if required by local wastewater treatment authorities Make informed purchase decisions with respect to reporting burden and liability
