“Feel The Funk” Retro-Theme
Drew Crowds and Praise

PPG’s retro-themed booth at SEMA was noted in Motor Trend magazine as “the best of the show.”  The décor was straight out of the 70’s complete with lava lamps, James Brown booming out of the speakers, and staffers dressed in retro clothing. The booth and theme was inspired by PPG’s newest addition to the Vibrance Collection® of custom finishes, Ditzler® Big Flake™, which produces a unique “retro” look when added to a basecoat or midcoat.

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio – November 9, 2007 – The Vibrance Collection® of custom finishes from PPG is all about color. So, the PPG team set out to create a stir at SEMA with their eye-popping booth, themed “Get Funky With PPG Color.”  The retro-themed booth was even noted in Motor Trend magazine as “the best of the show.”  The décor was straight out of the 70’s complete with lava lamps, James Brown booming out of the speakers, and staffers dressed in retro clothing.

The 70’s theme was inspired by PPG’s newest custom product, Ditzler® Big Flake™, six new pigments made of two very large standard flakes and four color shifting flakes that produces a unique “retro” look when added to a basecoat or midcoat. The product was named “Ditzler” after the Ditzler Color Company, the name of the original automotive paint company that was purchased by PPG in 1928.

“PPG marketed its Automotive Refinish products under the Ditzler name until 1986, and many PPG custom finishers are very nostalgic about the Ditzler name,” said Randy Cremeans, manager, collision segments, North America for PPG Automotive Refinish. “We felt Ditzler® Big Flake™ was an appropriate name for this “retro-looking” product.  Big metal flakes were popular in the 60’s and 70’s with hot rod and street rod customizers, and now that look is coming back.”

PPG staffers celebrated Halloween in their retro-themed booth at SEMA by dressing in 1970’s era costumes.  The booth and theme was inspired by PPG’s newest addition to the Vibrance Collection® of custom finishes, Ditzler® Big Flake™, which produces a unique “retro” look when added to a basecoat or midcoat.  PPG color experts are predicting that the retro-look for hot rod and street rods will be the newest trend for customizers.

The booth was filled with panels painted by PPG’s resident custom painting instructor, Paul Stoll that captured the essence of the 70’s and Big Flake colors.  Other color panels abounded demonstrating the many other dazzling colors and finishes from the Vibrance Collection®.

The PPG booth also featured a host of celebrities.  Famed motorcycle customizers Arlen Ness and Dave Perewitz, renowned hot rod artist Darrell Mayabb, and Larry Wood, chief designer for Hot Wheels®, a Mattel®, Inc. brand greeted guests and talked about their work.

Another outstanding feature of the PPG booth was the “Tractorri, an innovative, one-of-a-kind vehicle, wearing an experimental PPG finish.  A unique combination of a Lamborghini and a Mustang, the “Tractorri” wore a “special effect” pigment described as having a “rainbow haze”effect.  “This new product is still in development at the PPG Refinish laboratories in Cleveland,” Cremeans said. “PPG is reviewing feedback received from the SEMA show as part of their research.”

“We’re thrilled with the response we got to our booth at SEMA,” Cremeans continues. “When you’ve got a fabulous collection of colors to work with, showcasing those colors lends itself to a spectacular display.”
